Updated: Tuesday, 10:16 p.m.

Emergency responders are checking out a potential hazardous materials situation at 63 Richard Drive.

Emergency management director Michael Purcaro said that a resident of the home called authorities at about 6:30 p.m. because he was worried that something hazardous was in the dwelling.

Vernon police, ambulances and firefighters immediately descended on the property. Purcaro said the situation did not appear to be serious, but protocol must be followed when a haz-mat call comes in.

A haz-mat team from Ellington was called to the scene, suited up and began inspecting the property, Purcaro said.

At 7:48 p.m., Purcaro declared the scene clear. Nothing hazardous was found, he said.
