Police: Woman Charged in Infant Head Trauma Case

The infant now has a "significant disability," police said.

A Vernon woman is facing a serious assault charge for allegedly seriously injuring her infant child, Vernon police said on Monday.

Amanda McGuire, 24, of 31 Hansen Dr., Vernon, was arrested on Monday, police said. The incident took place in December and led to "abusive head trauma" to her 3-month-old son, police said.

The injury was discovered when the infant was brought to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center on Dec. 11, police said. The child was admitted to the intensive care unit with life-threatening injuries, police said in a news release.

A lengthy investigation was conducted by Vernon police detectives, the Tolland State’s Attorney’s Office, the state Department of Children and Families, and the SCAN - or Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect - program at CCMC, which resulted in a warrant being issued for McGuire’s arrest, police said.

McGuire is charged with:

• First-degree assault.

• Risk of injury to a minor.

• False statement, second-degree.

Police said the false statement charge stems from an initial statement McGuire given to Vernon detectives.

As a result of the serious head injury, the infant, "sustained significant disability," police said. The infant has been placed in the temporary custody of the Department of Children and Families, police said.

McGuire has a court set bond of $250,000 cash/surety and will be presented in Rockville Superior Court on Tuesday to answer the charges, police said.

McGuire has been arrested before, according to police records. In March 2011, she was involved in a domestic dispute and was charged with breach of peace, along with her husband, according to police records.
