Police: Reports That Officer Shot Himself During Manchester Community College Search 'Erroneous'

"It appears that maybe another officer's weapon discharged, maybe striking (the officer) in the foot," Manchester Police Capt. Christopher Davis told Patch Thursday.

Manchester Police say that the officer who was injured while searching the Manchester Community College for a reported gunman was not hit by a round accidentally discharged from his own gun, but may have instead been shot by another officer.

"It appears that maybe another officer's weapon discharged, maybe striking (the officer) in the foot," Manchester Police Cpt. Christopher Davis told Patch Thursday.

Davis would not release the name of the officer or his condition, but witnesses at the scene Wednesday said they saw an officer suffering from a foot injury being loaded into a police cruiser.

Davis said the officer was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment.

After a female student reported seeing a gun sticking out of another student's waistband, local and state police rushed to the Manchester Community College campus and locked it down for hours while they searched for the reported gunman. No one matching the description was found.

Davis said Connecticut State Police are handling the investigation into the gunman.

When asked, Davis said he did not think the alleged gunman would have been violating any laws if he had a permit to carry the gun on the MCC campus.

"It's not against the law," Davis said. "It might be against school policy, but I don't know that it would be necessarily agains the law if you had a permit."
