Police Investigating Three Overnight Burglaries

Statistically, nighttime residential burglaries are not very common.

Vernon police are piecing together the details of three bold burglaries or attempted ones that took place in town between 3 and 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a news release indicates.

An unknown number of people either broke into or tried to force their way into homes on Dailey Circle, Morrison Street and Highland Avenue while the people who lived in them were sleeping, police said.

Police outlined the details of the cases in a news release:

Vernon police were first alerted to criminal activity in the area at 3:45 a.m.  via a 911 call from a resident on Morrison Street reporting that someone had broken into the home while residents were sleeping. The residents heard someone walking around inside the home. The suspect or suspects had stolen items and money before fleeing the area. Several officers were dispatched to the scene, but did not locate the suspect or suspects. The thieves had entered the home through an unlocked rear door.

A short time later, at about 4:13 a.m., Vernon Police received another 911 call from a resident on Dailey Circle, reporting that residents woke up when  someone was trying to break in to the house. Several officers and a canine  unit responded to the scene. The area was thoroughly checked, but the suspect or suspects were not located. The suspect or suspects attempted to enter the home through a first-floor window, but were apparently scared off  before getting inside.

At about 7 a.m., a resident on Highland Avenue woke up and found that her house had been burglarized overnight while she had been sleeping. The victim had her pocketbook and other items stolen from her house.

Vernon police said they are looking into the "strong likelihood" that the incidents are connected. Anyone with information is asked to call police headquarters at 860-871-9126. Callers can remain anonymous, police said.

Police are reminding residents to take precautions, such as closing and locking all ground-floor windows while sleeping or when not at home and to lock all doors, particularly with a deadbolt-style lock. Police said the use of motion-sensor spotlights also helps.

Statistically, nighttime residential burglaries are not very common, police said.
