Police Arrest 15-year-old Student for Facebook Threat

Police: Student stayed home so Rockville High School encountered no direct danger.

A 15-year-old Rockville High School student is facing criminal charges today after threatening another student on a social networking site, police said.

Prior to school this morning, Rockville High officials told police that a student had posted a veiled threat on Facebook about possibly bringing a gun to school today, according to Public Information Officer Dan Champagne.

"We jumped on it and found the kid at home before he left for school," Champagne said.

The student is not being identified because of his age, in accordance with state law.

Officers spoke to the student's parents and after investigating determined that the student did not have a gun, Champagne said. The student did not attend school today, and was located at home, he said.

According to a news release, the student directed the threats toward another student "he was having problems with.''

In a news release Vernon police and school officials said that they "take all threats seriously."

Champagne said that there was never any danger to anyone at the high school. The student, though, was charged with second-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace. Police said he was released to his mother. No court date had been set as of late this afternoon.

Superintendent of Schools Mary Conway said school officials are investigating the incident, including how it may have disrupted the school day.
