Ninth Person Charged in Rockville Stabbing Case

A 16-year-old was taken into custody on Thursday, police said.

Vernon police have charged a ninth person in relation to a stabbing incident and subsequent riot in Downtown Rockville on April 19, an arrest report indicates.

This time, it is a 16-year-old from Vernon who was involved in the altercation that night, police said.

The youth is being treated as a juvenile, which means his or her identity is exempt from disclosure under state law.

The juvenile is charged with third-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace and unlawful assembly. The juvenile was assigned a Friday court date after being taken into custody at 7:24 p.m. on Thursday, an arrest report indicates.

The stabbing took place near the intersection of Ward and Union streets after a fight broke out on the sidewalk, law enforcement records indicate. With no available ambulances, the victim, an East Windsor man, bleeding from a knife wound to the chest, was carefully transported a short distance to Rockville General Hospital.

A mob gathered around the victim and followed the procession to the hospital and became unruly, police said. State police and officers from nearby towns arrived on the scene and assisted Vernon police with breaking up the incident.

The victim was moved to Hartford and released that weekend and was eventually charged as one of eight arrests before the juvenile was taken into custody.  

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
