Officer Charles Hicking, a nine-year veteran of the Vernon Police Department, has joined the detective division.
Chief James Kenny made the formal announcement on Monday at a reception for Hicking and his family.
"He has waited a long time for this," Kenny said. "He has done some extraordinary work in this department and has shown tenacity as an investigator."
Hicking joined the VPD in July 2004 after five years in Suffield.
In his tenure in Vernon, he has worked on patrol, as a community policing officer and in the East Central Narcotics Task Force.
