Firefighters Extinguish Old Dobson Road Blaze

A house fire at 18 Dobson Rd. was extinguished by the Vernon Fire Department Saturday afternoon.

Vernon firefighters extinguished a house fire at an Old Dobson Road residence Saturday afternoon, but not before it did serious damage to the property.

According to Vernon Fire Chief Bill Call, the department responded to a report of a fire at an abandoned residence at 18 Old Dobson Rd. at approximately 1 p.m. Call said the Vernon department was able to extinguish the fire in about 30 minutes, but that firefighters had to battle extreme heat, smoke and humidity, all of which only made their job more difficult.

“It’s pretty warm out,” he said.

No injuries reported at the scene, although the fire significantly damaged one half of the home, with the roof completely gone. Call said the Vernon Fire Department was still investigating the cause of the blaze Saturday afternoon, but that the fire had been “knocked down” and there was no chance of it spreading to other homes in the neighborhood.

Old Dobson Road intersects with the Hartford Turnpike at the corner where the former sits. Smoke from the blaze could be seen Saturday afternoon from as far away as the off ramp to Exit 65 of I-84.
