Fire Alarm Triggered at Town Hall

The scene was quickly secured.

A fire alarm was triggered at Town Hall at about 3 p.m. on Friday, and it sent both firefighters and police officers hustling to the scene.

The alarm went off at about 3 p.m. in the third-floor Town Council Chambers, Mayor George Apel and Town Administrator John Ward said. It is a short work day on Fridays - offices are open from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. - so just a few people were n the building at the time.

Ward said the first two floors were secured quickly after being inspected by fire officials.

The third floor was secured by about 4 p.m.

Ward and Mayor George Apel were the last to leave the scene and said it is rare to have an alarm triggered like that. Ward said all systems are being monitored and fire officials are trying to figure out what caused the alarm to go off, Ward said.

Ward said a custodian with 16 years at the Department of Public Works could not remember a single instance of an alarm being mysteriously triggered in the building.
