Drug "Take Back" Day on Tap for April 27

Collections wil be at the DPW garage.

The Vernon Police Department, in cooperation with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, will participate in the national "take back" drug initiative on April 27.

The take back initiative was designed to allow the public an opportunity to turn in unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs, police said.

The drugs will then be "safely and properly disposed of," police said.

"There is no cost to the public and no questions will be asked," police spokesman Lt. John Kelley said.

A drop-off point will be established at the Vernon Public Works garage, 375 Hartford Turnpike, from, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., police said.

"The Vernon Police Department is participating in this program to help protect the health and safety of residents," Kelley said "Prescription drugs and controlled substances are being misused and abused at alarming rates, leading to cases of accidental poisoning, overdose and addiction."

All drugs turned in during this initiative will be "incinerated," he said.
Residents can turn in all medications - all pills will be accepted as well as all liquid medications, police said. Needles will not be accepted, police said.

Authorities are recommending that folks dropping off remove all labels with personal information on the packaging prior to disposal. The police will not be looking at or gathering any personal information, Kelley said.
