Deli Fire Causes Smoke Condition at Rockville Stop & Shop

Quick-reacting employees put out the fire, the fire chief said.

A smoke condition broke out inside the Rockville Stop & Shop on Friday morning after wires caught fire in the deli department, Vernon Fire Department Chief William Call said.

The call came into dispatch at 6:29 a.m. Police and firefighters immediately rushed to the Windsorville Road Stop and shop and firefighters discovered smoke inside the building after employees used an in-store extinguisher to put out a small fire in a deli cooler, the chief said.

The cause seemed to be an electrical issue with wires in the cooler, Call said, but the cause was under investigation on Friday morning.

The store was closed while health officials inspected the smoke condition. A manager would not give an estimate about when the store would reopen, but an employee answering the phone at 9 a.m. said the store would be reopening before transferring the call.
