Crash Closes Route 30 at Rush Hour

An official at the scene said a pedestrian was hit.

Route 30 was closed in both directions between Vernon Ave and South Street at the evening rush hour today because of a traffic accident.

The road is known locally as Hartford Turnpike.

A fire police official at the scene said the crash involved a car and a pedestrian near the Mount Vernon apartment complex.

The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital via emergency helicopter, the official said. The official did not know the condition of the pedestrian.

An accident reconstruction team that included police officers from Vernon, Manchester and South Windsor was on the scene and were involved in a detailed investigation at about 5 p.m.

An official at the scene said the investigation "would take some time."

Traffic was being diverted away from the scene.
