Police said the first cruiser was at the scene within a minute after dispatchers received several 911 calls about the crash.

Police said the victim is a 13-year-old boy. Because of the nature of the crash, protocol dictates he be airlifted if possible, police said. He was sent to Hartford Hospital via Life Star helicopter, police said.

Police were describing the crash as "serious," but said at 8 p.m. that is appeared he "was going to be OK." Police did not have details on the boy's injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

A bicycle lay in the road and a car with a smashed windshield was stopped about 25 feet away in the westbound lane. Cars traveling both westbound and eastbound hit the boy, police said.
