Coventry Police Schedule Friday DUI Checkpoint

The checkpoint is slated for Boston Turnpike.

The Coventry Police Department, along with other local officers in the Metro Traffic Services network, will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint on Boston Turnpike starting Friday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m.

The checkpoint is scheduled to run until 2 a.m. Saturday.

Traffic in both directions will be affected, police said.

The checkpoint is being funded by a grant from the state Department of Transportation.

Metro Traffic Services is made up of officers from the Coventry, Enfield, South Windsor, Windsor, Windsor Locks, East Windsor, Manchester, Glastonbury and Vernon police departments.

Impaired driving is a real problem, but violating our constitution because of the enormity of the problem is not the solution. Checkpoints (stopping everyone) is unamerican and the kind of law enforcement you would expect to find in countries without democratic government. Find another way to address the problem.

Why would you tell people this! The point is to try and catch people not give them notice so they can avoid it! Haveing been the victim of a drunk driving accident there should be as many of these as the police can do and with no notice to drivers.

PR is a quirky requirement of the grant.
North Tolland November 28, 2012 at 12:26 am
The PR part is for deterrence. They'll mostly catch people who don't read the news.

North Tolland reminded me of a funny story. A few years, ago, Troop C called in a mild panic and asked us at the newspaper if we could sneak in a news brief on a seat belt check because the PR aspect was overlooked. We ran it. The next morning, the beat reporter who wrote the brief was the first one pulled over while driving to the barracks.

Hahaah. Well there goes my theory :)

Nah, that was an exception, so it is still a sound one.

Right on Nancy! Negativity begets negativity and that is exactly what we don't need now. TheRead More taxpayers of this town stepped up and allowed the BOE to prevail on referendum day. Time for parents to take a breather over the summer and let the BOE and Supt. do their work on plans to improve. Some people get so caught up in a fight that they can't drop it. Credit the Patch for many recent articles about the good things that kids are doing. Hope they keep it up. That's what we need to right now, especially when we have just been given new hope for the center of Rockville. Let's stop airing our "dirty laundry" to the rest of CT. It's a new day!
