[Updated] Children Hit By A Car on West Street

The children were crossing the street, police said.

Two children crossing West Street near the West Main Street intersection were hit by a passing car just after 5 p.m. on Saturday, police said.

Police did not identify the children by name. One, a boy, a Vernon resident, is 9 years old and was taken to Connecticut Children's Medical Center by Ambulance, police said. The other child was not identified by gender, but police said the child received minor injuries and was taken from the scene by a private vehicle.

Police were unaware to what extent the child taken to the hospital was hurt. 

Police said the children were crossing the street at the time of the incident.

An accident reconstruction team was on the scene by about 5:30 and police closed off West Street to traffic from the Drive-in Package Store to Union Street until 7:12 p.m.

The car involved in the incident was driven by Kristopher Hansen, 50, of Vernon and was heading southbound on West Street when the children crossed the road, police said.

The incident is under investigation and police said anyone witnessing the crash can call them at 860-872-9126, ext. 249.
