Case Continued for Driver in Accident that Killed East Windsor, Vernon Teens

Sara Ballard, 19, of South Windsor, is charged with, among other things, two counts of manslaughter in the second degree with a motor vehicle.

The arraignment for the 19-year-old woman who is facing manslaughter charges for her role in an accident that killed two teens was continued until Aug. 1. The crash occurred Memorial Day weekend on the South Windsor/East Windsor border.

South Windsor resident Sara Ballard, who is free on a $50,000 bond, was scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on July 11.

Ballard was charged in June with two counts of manslaughter in the second degree with a motor vehicle, two counts of assault in the second degree, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and reckless driving.

According to police, Ballard was driving in excess of 80 miles per hour on Abbe Road on May 25 when she lost control of her vehicle and left the road.

According to the arrest affidavit, Ballard had been smoking marijuana earlier in the evening.

Two teens - Matthew Masse, 18, of Vernon, and Brooke Wormstedt, 15, of East Windsor - died in the crash. Two other teens were injured.
