The stabbing took place on April 19 near the intersection of Ward and Union streets after a fight broke out on the sidewalk, law enforcement records indicate.

With no available ambulances, the victim, an East Windsor man, bleeding from a knife wound to the chest, was carefully transported a short distance to Rockville General Hospital on a cruiser's hood. A mob gathered around the victim and followed the procession to the hospital and became unruly, police said. State police and officers from nearby towns arrived on the scene and assisted Vernon police with breaking up the incident.

The victim was moved to Hartford and released that weekend and was eventually charged as one of eight arrests before a juvenile was taken into custody a few days later to put the total at nine.
