Armed Robber Hits Route 83 Subway

For the second time in three days, a bandit brandishing a handgun has held up a dining establishment on Route 83, police said.

On Wednesday, it was the Subway at 53 Hartford Turnpike. Hartford Turnpike is the local name for that section of Route 83.

At about 9:48 p.m., a Vernon Police Department dispatcher took a 911 emergency call from an employee at the Subway restaurant and the employee reported that an armed robbery had just taken place, according to a news release.

The suspect was last seen running from the restaurant, police said.

Vernon Police Officers responded to the scene. The area was searched by officers and a canine unit, but the suspect was not located, according to a news release.

The suspect is described as a black male in his mid to late 20s, approximately 5-foot-9. The robber was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and a black bandana covering his face, police said.

He was armed with a revolver, police said.

No injuries were reported. The suspect fled with an undetermined amount of money, police said.

Vernon Detectives said the Subway incident could be connected to other recent armed robberies in the area, including a similar robbery at the People’s Choice pizza place on Monday.

A robber fitting the same description armed with a similar weapon took money from People's Choice and fled on foot toward Route 83 and Merline Road, police said. The pizza place is in the shopping plaza located at that intersection.

Anyone with any information on either of three robberies is asked to call Vernon detectives at 860-872-9126. Callers can remain anonymous, police said.
