A Busy Saturday Night for the Vernon Fire Department

A parade was followed by a call at Valley Falls.

Saturday night was one of both pomp and response for the Vernon Fire Department.

At 5:15 p.m., members of the department took part - as they always do - in the Ellington Firemen's Carnival Parade. The VFD was able to show off its new trucks in one of their first major public appearances.

But just a few minutes after the parade was over, emergency responders had to rush to Valley Falls Park to rescue a man who had fallen 40 feet on one of the trails.

All-terrain vehicles were requested for the rescue because helicopters were not flying because of incoming severe weather.

Authorities could not be reached on Saturday night to elaborate on the Valley Falls rescue.

Heavy rain did come to the area at about an hour after that 6:31 p.m. call to Valley Falls and so  did a fire on Boulder Road in Manchester that required mutual aid.
