Vernon's Budget Referendum on Tap for Next Week

Voting is scheduled for May 7.

The referendum to decide the fate of Vernon's proposed $82.6 million budget  for the 2013-14 fiscal year is scheduled for May 7. 

Here is an overview: 

• The bottom line is $82,601,659, an increase of $2,002,499 over the current year's budget of $80,599,160. 

• General government is proposed at $26,522,202. That's $349,835 more than this year. 

• At $5,909,679, capital improvement and debt service is down by $336,126. 

• Education is proposed at $50,169,787. That is $1,988,790 more than this year's budget. 

• Mayor George Apel took out $1.5 million from the original education request.
 
• Voting on the budget proposal is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Center 375, located at 375 Hartford Turnpike. 

• There will be "yes" and "no" boxes for the following question: "Shall the Town of Vernon adopt a budget in the amount of $82,601,659 for the period commencing July 1, 2013 and ending June 30, 2014?"

• Residents can vote. 

• So can taxpayers who own at least $1,000 in assessed property. 

• Voters will be required to show proper identification. 

• Absentee ballots are available sat the town clerk's office. 

• Counting will take place at Center 375.
