DPW: Town Not Collecting Tag Sale Leftovers at the Curb

Officials have outlined collection options.

Public Works officials on Monday said they wanted to remind Vernon residents that tag sale leftovers place on the curb will not be collected free of charge by the department.   

Officials said residents have the following options for disposing of bulky items: 

• METAL - TRANSFER STATION: Items that are at least 75 percent metal will now be accepted at the Transfer Station free of charge. Items like sleeper sofas or recliners that have only a small amount of metal are now considered bulky items. A permit and punchcard are required to dispose of bulky items. 

• ELECTRONICS - TRANSFER STATION: Electronics (computer equipment, cell phones, stereo and radio equipment, VCRs, etc.) may be recycled free of charge (i.e. a permit and punchcard will not be necessary) at the Vernon Transfer Station. Televisions will be accepted as part of this electronics recycling drop-off.

• SINGLE BURNABLE ITEM DROP-OFF - TRANSFER STATION: One burnable item will be accepted at the Transfer Station free of charge on Wednesday, May 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, May 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, May 5 from noon to 4 p.m. 

• WEEKLY PAID PICKUP: The Public Works Department has a weekly paid pickup program. It is available every Wednesday at residents' convenience and costs $45 for an area measuring 7-feet square. There is an additional charge for freon units. Anyone is interested in scheduling a Wednesday pickup can call the Public Works office at 860-870-3500. 

• CARDBOARD: Cardboard/boxboard may be disposed of with weekly curbside pickup. Large amounts of cardboard may be disposed of at the Transfer Station at no charge. 

• CLOTHING and SHOES: A collection container for these items is located in front of the Public Works Garage at 375 Hartford Turnpike. 

• BOOKS (HARD and SOFT COVER, INCLUDING ENCYCLOPEDIAS), DVDs, VHS TAPES: A collection container for these items is located at the Transfer Station located on Hockanum Boulevard. A permit and punchcard are not required.
