DPW Outlines Yard Waste Rules

No grass clippings with the trash.

Here is a news release from the Department of Public Works:

April 26, 2013

DISPOSAL OF YARD WASTE

Leaf Bins
 - Unfortunately, the leaf bin located at the Nye Street Firehouse has been shut down due to contamination caused by disposal of other types of yard waste.   This leaf bin will reopen the first week in May.  Residents may use the leaf bin located on Church Street as well.   Please remember that leaf bins are for LEAVES ONLY!  No grass clippings or brush are allowed.  Remove the container used to transport leaves.  Plastic bags can be left in the trash barrel.  Lawn-sized paper bags are recyclable and do not need to be emptied.

Grass Clippings - Under the State Public Act #98-99 (effective Jan. 1, 1999) the Vernon Public Works Department cannot accept grass clippings with the weekly refuse collection, at our Transfer Station or at any other resource recovery facility or solid waste facility in Connecticut. The DEEP suggests that residents recycle or compost their grass clippings. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn reduces watering, thatching, and applying fertilizers.

Brush and Other Yard Waste
 – Once a week small amounts of brush as well as one trash bag of tree trimmings, twigs, weeds, pinecones and pine needles will be accepted at no charge to Vernon residents at the Transfer Station. Large amounts of yard waste will require the purchase of a permit and punchcard.

Thank you for your cooperation!
