A Never-Ending Story

We human beings are unique among all God’s creation in that we have the capacity for memory.  Animals may be able to learn and “remember” things, but there is no real evidence to suggest that they have any ability to put their remembrances into any kind of historical context.  In other words, they cannot plan future courses of action based upon past events.  Only humans have any real sense of “history” as a meaningful subject for discussion or debate.

In the past, I have noted in another context that if you play a little anagram-type word game, the word “history” can be rephrased as HIS and STORY.  In addition to that, I have further pointed out that if “history” were spelled like this …

                                      h i s T o r y

… it would remind us that God placed the CROSS of Jesus Christ at the center of the story of His work in human history.  That’s why the calendar is now divided into B.C. and A.D.  It is divided between all that happened before Jesus came, and all that has happened since.

In God’s grand scheme, I came to know Jesus Christ as my personal Savior a little over 41 years ago on Thursday, May 18, 1972.  And like history, I now look at my life as being divided into two parts.  It is divided between all that happened before Jesus came into my life, and all that has happened since.

I know that it probably sounds weird, but I can actually tell you that as of today, Tuesday, October 29, 2013, I have walked with the Lord for 15,139 days.  I can also tell you that as of today, I have now lived almost exactly 62.01% of my life with the Lord.  I told you it would probably sound weird.

I mention all of this in order to simply say that I want my life to make a difference.  I don’t want one day to be just like any other.  And I don’t want for one week, or one month, or one year, to be just like any other.  I want to live my life in a conscience way so that every day I am fully aware that I am walking with the Lord.  Once upon a time I did not walk with Jesus; but now I do, and I don’t ever want to take that fact for granted ever again.

Just as “history” is the story of God at work in human history, so my life is one story of God at work in one human life.  And because of that I have become a part of a never-ending story.  When my kids were quite small, there was a movie that came out entitled, “The NeverEnding Story.”  It was a wonderful movie about a little boy who becomes a part of the actual story in a fantastical book that he is reading.  The plot is too complicated to explain, but it would be well worth your watching it if you are at all into fantasy adventure films.

Before I close out these Ramblings I will say one thing about the story line though.  In order to actually make a difference in the outcome of the book, the little boy has to believe that what’s happening in the book is real.  And in a sense, it’s like that when it comes to faith in Jesus.  In order to actually be able to make an eternal difference in Rockville (or anywhere else in the world), a person must believe that what God has written in the Bible is real.  And once they believe, then they become a part of HIS STORY within human history, and a part of His NeverEnding Story as well.
