Strong Farm Work Day Planned

The property is being spruced up in anticipation of capital improvements.

On Sept. 29, the Strong Family Farm will open its doors from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and invite volunteers to help spruce up the old barn and out buildings before capital improvements can begin.

A short orientation and farm tour will get the day started off before the work begins.

Volunteers are asked to bring tools, brooms, weed-whackers, gloves and/or paint brushes. This is also an opportunity for people who have experience with agricultural antiques to help catalog and date the farm’s inventory, farm, officials said.

All volunteers are invited to bring something to share for a pot luck lunch on the farm.

For more information or to volunteer, visit http://www.strongfarm.org, e-mail nstrongfarm@gmail.com or call and leave a message at 860-874-9020.

Strong Farm is remembered for white turkeys, mounds of pumpkins, fresh vegetables, and flowers that you could pick up at leisure as you drove by the property.

The farm is defined by the yellow dutch barn and white farmhouse next to sunlit hayfields.

It has been a part of the landscape on West Road in Vernon Center since 1878 and it will soon become a non-profit historical, educational, agricultural center, open to the public, courtesy of the Strong family and friends.
