More Contestants Needed for Strong Farm Scarecrow Contest

Saturday is cleanup day at the farm.

Saturday is the annual cleanup day at Strong Farm and the inaugural October   scarecrow contest will begin Sunday.

Farm officials are still looking for for more contestants. Vernon Patch has partnered with the farm for the contest.

Each of the farm’s fence posts along Peterson Road will be assigned to contestants. There will be four family friendly categories – traditional, youth, business and other.

The contest starts Sunday and runs through Oct. 5.

The scarecrows will be judged soon after and will remain for the remainder of the month for the public to view. A special “Farmers Choice” will be awarded by the Strong family. The contest is free to everyone and winners will receive a certificate and blue ribbon.

Vernon Patch is sponsoring a "people's choice" scarecrow voting on the home page.

A cleanup day has been scheduled for Saturday and volunteers are needed to help spruce up the old barn and out buildings before capital improvements can begin.

A short orientation and farm tour will get the day started off before the work begins.

Volunteers are asked to bring tools, brooms, weed-whackers, gloves and/or paint brushes. The work day is also an opportunity for people who have experience with agricultural antiques to help catalog and date the farm’s inventory, farm, the family said.

All volunteers are asked to bring something to share for a pot luck lunch on the farm.

For more information on any program and to sign up for the scarecrow contest, visit the farm web site at www.strongfarm.org, e-mail  nstrongfarm@gmail.com, or call 860-874-9020 (leave a name and address and information and an application will be sent out).

Information and scarecrow entry forms are at the farm stand.
