Champagne Comments on RGH Merger Proposal

A news release from the Republican mayoral candidate.

Republican mayoral candidate Daniel Champagne on Tuesday issued the following statement on Rockville General Hospital's proposed merger:

"I am writing to all my family, friends and neighbors in Vernon and the surrounding towns. I am very concerned about what is happening to Rockville General Hospital and want to do whatever I can to try and save our hospital.

"Rockville General Hospital has a special place in my heart, I worked there for almost five years, have been treated there many times and my daughters were born in the birthing center. I met my wife there. Since the merger with Manchester Memorial Hospital I have seen the loss of the birthing center and the number of inpatient beds has declined.

"Rockville City Hospital, as it was called back then, first opened its doors in 1921.  After a few years, Hospital Trustees purchased property and in 1945, Rockville General Hospital opened in a mansion formally owned by the Maxwell family. Our fathers and grandfathers realized the need back then for a local health care facility that could serve the town and its neighbors.

"We need to take a stand as a community and protect our local hospital.  If elected Mayor, I will do whatever I can under the law to maintain Rockville General Hospital and keep it open in our community."
