Vernon schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday because of the potential effects of Hurricane Sandy, Superintendent of Schools Mary Conway said on Sunday.
A message on the local emergency alert system was sent out at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Vernon Center Middle School is used as a regional emergency shelter, another reason for the closings, Conway said.
Town officials habe been meeting throughout the day to prepare for the storm. Winds should pick up later in Sunday and the full effects should be felt Monday, officials said.
