New Study: Arsenic Found in Rice Products

Consumer Reports found "worrisome levels" of arsenic in a wide-range of rice products.

Many popular rice products contain “worrisome levels” of arsenic, a substance that is a know carcinogen, the publication Consumer Reports has found in a new study.

The magazine’s report is prompting consumer groups to increase pressure on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to set more stringent limits on how much arsenic can be present in rice and other foods.

The Consumer Reports study comes on the heels of a January investigation in which the magazine found troubling levels of arsenic in apple and grape juice products. The results led the magazine to study some 200 samples of a host of rice products, many of them popular brands found on grocery store shelves, including organic ones and those aimed at the growing “gluten free” market.

“The results of our tests were even more troubling in some ways than our findings for juice. In virtually every product tested, we found measurable amounts of total arsenic in its two forms. We found significant levels of inorganic arsenic, which is a carcinogen, in almost every product category, along with organic arsenic, which is less toxic but still of concern. Moreover, the foods we checked are popular staples, eaten by adults and children alike.”

Besides being a known carcinogen, inorganic arsenic also is believed to cause health problems in children later in life, the Consumer Reports study states.

why aren't food brands listed in this article?....we're worrying blindly here.

I find it sourly amusing that rice from California, widely mocked for its level of regulation and "interference" with business, is far less of a risk than rice from proud "pro business" states like Texas and Georgia. I guess if you're a trained food chemist you don't need the government to protect your family's food with pesticide and ag chemical regulations.

Yeah, we definitely need less government. Too many regulations, tying the hands of business, and hurting the "job creators".

Most of the arsenic found in these food s was naturally occurring and at a level that is not harmful to humans. Although, scientists are pushing the FDA to set limits for arsenic in foods. NPR did a story about this the other day.

It is sad that you have to perpetuate the negativity that has plagued an otherwise wonderful schoolRead More district. If you think that Vernon is in the "Bottom 30" because for the last 2 weeks your child has done nothing but watch movies, that is even sadder. However I do have this question for you, how do you know that is all they have done? Have you called the teacher and asked him or her? I have always found that at times what my child has said is exaggerated. I like to talk to the adult before just taking the word of my child. Maybe they are watching them part of the day which I am sure happens in any district, even ones in the top 20, at the end of the school year. However, if you are not happy with Vernon there are other options out there, instead of slamming your school system through media.
