Mayor Declares a State of Emergency in Vernon as Hurricane Sandy Approaches

An emergency shelter will open at VCMS on Sunday and schools are closed Monday and Tuesday.

Vernon Mayor George Apel has declared a "Civil Preparedness State of Emergency" for the town in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy.

An emergency shelter will be located at the Vernon Center Middle School, 777 Hartford Turnpike, and will be will open at 5 p.m. Sunday - tonight.

Those using the shelter should bring with them medications, bedding, towels and personal hygiene items.

No food will be served until Monday morning.

Pets are permitted but must be caged.

A town-wide parking ban will be in effect from 7 a.m. on Monday 7 a.m. on Wednesday, police said. Cars are not to be parked on roadways, police said.

Vernon schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

There will be no trash collection on Monday or Tuesday.

Public safety officials are warning residents to stay away from downed power lines and to report emergencies and downed lines to 911.
