List of Suspected and Accused Boy Scout Molesters Includes Vernon Man

The list, which includes information from 1970 to 1991, was compiled by a Seattle lawyer who is suing the Boy Scouts of America.

Twenty-one Connecticut men are among a long list of Boy Scout leaders who were ejected by the Boy Scouts of America between 1970 and 1991 after the organization learned that they had either been charged with or accused of molestation or other sexual malfeasance.

The names are part of a long list compiled by Seattle lawyer Timothy Kosnoff, who calls his list "the largest compilation of criminological data of child molestation in a youth organization anywhere," according to a story today by The Star-Ledger of Newark, NJ. A Vernon man was named on the list.

It includes 22 Connecticut men from 19 Connecticut towns who served in the scouts, some dating back to the early-1970s. Some were charged with rape, other types of sexual assaults, risk of injury to a minor and impairing the morals of a minor.

The towns are Hartford, Groton, Bridgeport, Storrs, Wolcott, Norwich, East Hartford, Vernon, Brooklyn, Berlin, Mystic, Meriden, Ashford, Stamford, Southington, Glastonbury, Madison, and Willimantic.

Kosnoff’s list is separate from the official internal list compiled Boy Scout officials over the last four several decades of troop leaders suspected or accused of inappropriate conduct. That list will be released today.

The Boy Scouts of  America today is releasing documents related to a lawsuit Kosnoff against the organization.

THIS IS AWFUL NEWS, BUT DEFINITELY GET IT OUT THERE AND CLEAN AGAIN ! My late husband was an Eagle Scout , in Connecticut - my Brother was too... and so later, husband was a scout master and me a Den Mother, AND Brownie Mom for our daughter later, in the 70s in North Carolina where he worked at the time. My "cubbers" still find me online and the memories so rich and good and the morals, too!
Thanksomuch for this fine information.

awful! these parents and children trusted these men...and these poor boy scouts are damaged for life! think about all the meetings and camping trips away from parents! poor poor children! i hope justice will be served!

The list begins in 1970. That may have to do with availability of records, but as a boy from 1936 through high school, 1954, I never heard of such a thing as men and boy sex. I could roam the streets around my home and never did my Mother worry about molesters. If you were unlucky enough to have rich parents you might have to worry about kidnapping, such as Lindburgh, but molestation - not before the free sex teachings of the 1960's ?

Really Ed? You REALLY think it didn't occur before the 60s? Please. Just because everyone covered it up doesn't mean it didn't happen. The scout files stretch back to something like 1910. Blaming molestation on the 60s is like blaming handguns for murder. Thank goodness ALL of this is finally seeing the light of day and some of these poor men might get some peace of mind.

I have scoured the list and there is no-one from Vernon Ct on it. If you can find the Vernon connection you are a better Database analyst then me.

The scout files show that boys were being molested by scout masters back in 1910? Then I would be wrong on that, Paul. But I knew plenty of folks who would have had a tar and feather gathering if someone molested their son when I was growing up. I do not know any who would have covered it up. Still, if you have indications that such occurred, then I am wrong. But ask older men how many were afraid as youngsters of playing out in the streets due to sexual predators. I think you will find the fear was getting home late for supper.

I have discovered from researching the new “rigorous” National Common Core Standards.Read More First of all, I learned that in order for our state to receive available Federal stimulus money, state Governors and Chief State School Officers around the country were required to sign a Memo of Understanding by January 2010 promising to adopt a national common standard. I also learned that local district Superintendents and School Board Presidents were encouraged by the state to sign a similar Memo of Understanding by May 28, 2010 if they wanted their district to receive any of the money.

I have to agree with J.L. Why in the world wouldn't you talk directly to the teacher if this was anRead More issue? It is really easy to throw a screen name into the mix and complain for all of Vernon to see here on the Patch. It's time to stop perpetuating the negativity. The town council, BoE, and Dr. Conway are just starting to make some headway with education progress in Vernon, this isn't helping. Try to remember that our kids teachers are our neighbors here in Vernon and to attack them anonymously here...NOT COOL!
Bert June 19, 2013 at 11:54 am
Right on Nancy! Negativity begets negativity and that is exactly what we don't need now. TheRead More taxpayers of this town stepped up and allowed the BOE to prevail on referendum day. Time for parents to take a breather over the summer and let the BOE and Supt. do their work on plans to improve. Some people get so caught up in a fight that they can't drop it. Credit the Patch for many recent articles about the good things that kids are doing. Hope they keep it up. That's what we need to right now, especially when we have just been given new hope for the center of Rockville. Let's stop airing our "dirty laundry" to the rest of CT. It's a new day!
