Letter: Support the Education Budget

A Patch letter.

To the Editor:

As you all know, Vernon does not rank very high in comparison to other schools in Connecticut. Our future as a town, state or even the country depends on the schooling of our children. It is the job of the educators we hire to teach our children and as citizens, it is our job to make sure the educators are given the resources and tools to do their job the best they can.

Last year, the big news regarding Vernon public schools was school consolidation. School consolidation was considered as a way to increase test scores overall through out the school district. Now the Board of Education's 2013-2014 budget is destined for referendum and it is being recommended that $1.5 million be cut which would reduce staff, existing programs and make no new investments.

I personally think that education budget cuts are ludicrous. How are educators supposed to do more with less? How are test scores going to increase if there are more demands on smaller staff? How are students going to get the attention they need and deserve to enable them to advance in their education?

There is a scheduled budget presentation on March 28. I will not be able to attend. However, I would like to be put on record as supporting the Board of Education's budget. I would also like to ask the Town Council and mayor to please, reconsider the budget as presented by the board of education.
