Doc in Child Porn Case Pleads Guilty, Gets 4 Years

Carl Koplin will also pay a fine of $10,000.

Tolland resident and former Vernon family doctor Carl Koplin was sentenced to 51 months in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to receipt of child pornography in the Hartford U.S. District Court, according to a release from the state's U.S. Attorney's Office.

Koplin, 55, will also pay a $10,000 fine and will be supervised for five years after his release.

“This defendant’s appalling collection of child pornography was one of the largest that we have seen here in Connecticut,” stated U.S. Attorney David B. Fein in the press release. “It’s reprehensible that a practicing physician who held such an important position of trust in the community victimized so many children by collecting and trading sexually explicit images of them. This Office is committing to working with the FBI, Connecticut Child Exploitation Task Force and our other law enforcement partners to protect children by stemming the distribution of these images and vigorously prosecuting offenders.”

Federal agents found more than 800 gigabytes of child pornography in Koplin's home in July 2010. Officials said it was one of the largest collections ever investigated in the state. Koplin's medical practice was run out of Vernon, on Hartford Turnpike.

According to trial documents, Koplin agreed to perform physical exams for students trying out for school sports. He pleaded guilty to a receipt of child pornography charge in August 2012. Koplin has been under house arrest and has been monitored electronically since his arrest, according to the release.
