The Vernon Department of Public Works is asking residents not to dispose of ashes from fireplaces and wood stoves in the trash and recycling bins.
Public Works Director Robert Kleinhans did not mention any specific incidents, but said it is a safety concern.
"Even though the ashes may appear cold, buried embers may still be capable of starting a fire," he said.
A public ash disposal container is located at the DSPW garage, 375 Hartford Turnpike, Kleinhans said.
Questions can be directed to the DPW at 860-870-3500.
