Amid Piles of Snow and Cleanup Efforts, Freezing Rain Headed to Vernon on Monday

Monday trash and recycling pickups are canceled; both will be collected the following Monday or they can be dropped off at the Transfer Station on Monday and Tuesday.

Vernon could have another weather mess on its hands on Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the area until 11 a.m. on Monday. The service is forecasting freezing rain, up to a half-inch.

Emergency Management Director Michael Purcaro said it could turn into  "dangerous" conditions.

"We should not underestimate this new storm as we continue to recover from the blizzard," he said on Sunday.

The following is a storm cleanup bulletin from the Vernon Office of Emergency management:

• There will be no trash or recycling pickups on Monday. Public Works Director Robert Kleinhans said Friday trash and recycling will not be picked up until this coming Friday and Monday's pickups are also suspended for the week and will be picked up the following Monday. The Transfer Station on Hockanum Boulevard will accept trash and recycling on Monday and Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no punch card required.

• Vernon public schools will be closed Monday while the cleanup from the snowstorm continues.

• The Vernon Public Works Department is fully staffed and working to
clear roads as quickly and safely as possible. Please do not deposit
snow into the roadways.

• Exposure to cold can cause life-threatening health conditions.
For your own safety, do not overexert yourself in snow removal
activities. If you notice the signs of cardiac distress, notify 911
immediately. These can be but are not limited to chest pain, difficulty
breathing, dizziness, and excessive sweating.

• Mayor George Apel thanks you for your continued support and cooperation
as we continue to recover from the recent winter storm.

Also, Fire Chief William Call is asking residents to clear snow from all fire hydrants.
