Vernon Junior Women's Club - 50+ Years and Going Strong!

Who is VJWC? Vernon Junior Women's Club is open to women who wish to work with others to improve their community and themselves. Come build lasting friendships!

If you had asked me in June 2008 what Vernon Junior Women's Club was or what it did, I couldn't have told you. Perhaps I would have vaguely remembered a high school scholarship I received from the group, but that would be about it. Then I took my older daughter to the first day of Safety Town before she went to kindergarten. For anyone who grew up in Vernon in the last 40 years, the part of this experience that probably stands out for you is riding the Big Wheels bikes around a make-believe town. At the end of the week, at the "graduation" ceremony, I learned that this great program was run by VJWC. I thought, "Wow, I like the idea of helping out with this and giving back to the community." So I filled out a short form and indicated that I was interested in joining the group.

Flash forward 4 years later and I'm the President of Vernon Junior Women's Club and the co-chair for Safety Town. And what an amazing experience it continues to be. The club has just celebrated its 51st year of helping the Vernon community through activities and donations. Last year, we donated over $4000 to local organizations such as the Hockanum Valley Community Council, the Tri-Town Shelter, the Rockville Public Library, and Vernon Police Explorers. The club worked hard to raise this money by selling concessions at Rentschler Field all year long and were happy to send it out into the community to help others.

The club also provides opportunities to help with local activities. For example, we're helping to organize and coordinate the upcoming Memorial Day parade in Vernon. Make sure to wave to the ladies in white shirts pulling wagons filled with water bottles on Monday! We're planning to help with other upcoming town events as well.

The women who make up the club come from diverse backgrounds, different occupations, and all sorts of family situations. But they are amazing in their strength, resiliance, and capacity for caring. In just the past few years, we've been there for each other through good times and hard times, whether it's a meal, a ride, or just a hug. I'm so proud to be part of VJWC.

If all of this sounds interesting to you, please send me an email (cebrouillard@gmail.com). I'd love to talk to you about becoming part of this terrific organization! I'll be blogging about upcoming activities and opportunities, so keep an eye out for VJWC!
