(Updated); Vernon Has Plenty of Economic Development Activity Along Route 83

Tractor Supply could open by Nov. 10.

The Route 83 corridor in Vernon between Pitkin Street Road Merline Road has become a hotbed of development.

The road is known locally as Talcottville Road.

Cardio Express has been in its new home for some time and Shaun Gately, Vernon's Economic Development Director, said he and the buildings owners have been actively marketing the remaining available space in the building.

A gas station featuring a Blimpie shop has been open for about two weeks.

A Tractor Supply store has been anchoring the efforts. Michael Graham, a spokesman for the national chain, said store's soft opening is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 10 with a grand opening celebration slated for Nov. 17. Mayor George Apel said he would like to perform a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony there.

Cumberland Farms last week closed on a parcel at 327 Talcottville Road. Gately said he has not been made aware of any construction timetable for a new convenience store, but stressed the chain "now owns the land."

Gately said he is also actively marketing the land to the immediate north of Tractor Supply and the parcel to the immediate south of the plaza at the 400 block of Talcottville Road.

Cumberland Farms representatives could not be reached for comment in Thursday. There is a Cumberland Farms adjcen t to the Cardio building on Talcottville Road.

Isn't there already a Cumberland Farms 2 blocks away? Is that one moving?

We have messages in to the Cumberland Farms PR staff about what might happen.

Also, the Merline Professional Building (office building at 351 Merline Road - corner of Route 83 and Merline Road) is now 100% occupied. This property is managed by Borden Realty. Liane Lombardi, Broker, Borden Realty, 860-268-8115.

I can imagine that Cumberland Farms conversation will go something like this, "The current location has been deemed too small, therefore we have decided to build a larger much more profitable location. It is not fully known what will happen to the old location, we may close it and let it sit vacant or we may sell the property." It just so happens I may have heard them say something along those lines. My prediction is that the existing location may end up looking like the old Mobil Station lot across from Tri-city. I t would not benefit them to sell the property to a competitor.

Now, when i Wendy;s moving in?
Chris Dehnel (Editor) October 19, 2012 at 11:28 PM
I asked that very question yesterday - Wendy's still looking around.
Ann D'Onofrio October 20, 2012 at 04:11 AM
I remember reading that Wendy's was moving in the area near Aldi's
Chris Dehnel (Editor) October 20, 2012 at 04:13 AM
Officials say Wendy is still looking for a workable spot and no specific parcel has been mentioned for her.
