Vernon Town-Wide Tag Sale Fizzles Out - At Least for a Year

The event traditionally takes place on the final weekend in April.

It appears there will be no coordinated effort to conduct a Vernon town-wide tag sale on the final weekend in April.

The sale has become a tradition over the years and draws bargain-hunters from all over the area, but Tolland County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Candice Corcione explained that things had become too complicated this year.

Fewer people had been participating in a pull-out guide published by a local media outlet so the effort was no longer cost-effective, she said.

The Chamber was never the official sponsor, but it had become the de-facto tag sale committee, at least in terms of being the distribution center for things like signage, balloons and sign-ups.

Last year's tag sale was popular in terms of houses offering items for sale, but a tour of the town made it obvious that many residents did not participate in the mapping program and piggy-backed off of residents who had.

Corcione said the Chamber needs a year to work with community groups to figure out the future of the event.

She said the Chamber will be offering tag sale space at its annual Treasurers or Trinkets event on Sept. 15 at the Tolland County Agricultural Center.
