It's Time for Another Vernon Leaf Season

The DPW has released preliminary guidelines for leaf disposal.

Has anyone noticed?

The leaves are not only starting to turn, but some are falling.

And thus, we have the first leaf season set of instructions from the Vernon Department of Public Works.

DPW Director Robert Kleinhans said this week that leaf bins will be open by mid-October.

They will be located at:

• The Nye Street Firehouse off West Street

• The Church Street parking lot

• Legion Field (off Regan Road at rear of parking lot)

Residents are being asked to deposit leaves only in the areas provided.
Bins are for leaves only, Kleinhans said, and that means no grass clippings or brush can be tossed into the leaf bins.

"Contamination" caused by disposing any other type of yard waste will result in a leaf bin being shut down, he said.

Residents must also remove the container used to transport leaves and plastic bags can be left in the adjacent trash barrels, Kleinhans said.

Lawn-sized paper bags are recyclable and do not need to be emptied, he added.

Bagged leaves cannot be put out for collection with regular trash, Kleinhans said. A pickup for bagged leaves may be scheduled for the first two Fridays in December via the DPW at 860-870-3500.

Both biodegradable paper bags and plastic lawn & leaf bags will be collected, Kleinhans said.

Leaf collection is scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov. 4, Kleinhans said. More information on the schedule should be published within "the next couple of weeks," Kleinhans said.
