The Top 10 Stories of 2011: No. 9 - Development

A big loss has been backed up by several gains.

Vernon Patch is taking a look back at 10 stories that sum up life in town during 2011.

Here is No. 9 - Development.

The town certainly had a shock this year when TicketNetwork left its longtime Bolton Road location, jumped on board the governor's First Five program, and settled just across three South Windsor line at the former Gerber Scientific building on Kelly Road.

But the gains seemed to out-shine that loss, at least in terms of sheer quantity.

After all, two of the more notorious vacancies - the old Bennigan's restaurant on Route 30 and the building on Route 83 designated for Cardio Express look like they are going to be filled soon.

R House restaurant moved into Route 30 and Zahner's Fine Apparel moved down the road into the Shops at 30 plaza with rein's Deli.

Any's Attic filled a vacancy in Rockville and the Old Big Tang restaurant on Union Street is being replaced by Peking House.

And Wendy's has begun looking at locations in town.

Said Economic Development Coordinator Shaun Gately, "Vernon remains an area of interest for several business looking to relocate, and I will continue using every tool at my disposal to assist them."
