Summertime Reading Program in Full Swing at Rockville Public Library

Board of Education Member Laura Bush reads to young people.

Laura Bush is a true educator.

She's a member of the Vernon Board of Education and a teacher in the Andover school system.

But want to get her really excited? Let her read to pre-schoolers.

Bush was the guest reader  this week during the Rockville Public Library's Story Hour. She picked three books - "The Squeaky Door'' by Margaret Read MacDonald and Mary Newell DePalma, "The Hello-Goodbye Window by Norton Juster and Chris Raschka and "Miss Tutu's Star'' by Leslea Newman and Carey Armstrong-Ellis.

Bush read with expression and made sure each child was involved in the picture discussions.

"I love reading to this age group,'' she said. "It can be a lot of fun.'' Bush said she does a lot of chapter readings with elementary school students.

Bush's session with the young people is part of the library's summer reading program. Other features include:

• Story hour for ages 2 through 4: Wednesdays through Aug. 17 at 10:30 a.m.

• Story Time with Peg Donovan. Donovan uses books puppets and songs to make stories commune alive, Wednesday, June 29 at 10:30 a.m.

• Story Hour with state Rep. Claire Janowski, Tuesday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m.

• Mother Goose Story Time with Ellie Toy, Wednesday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m.
