National Night Out is Tuesday

Free food and a variety of activities are on tap for downtown Rockville.

National Night Out is coming to downtown Rockville on Tuesday.

From 5 to 8 p.m. , the Rockville Community Alliance, in conjunction with the Vernon Police Department, the Vernon Parks and Recreation Department, Target, Rockville Bank and the Vernon Community Network will be sponsoring the block party-style celebration.

National Night Out is geared toward families and a crime-free community and attracts thousands to downtown Rockville each summer. National Night Out features free entertainment, free exhibits, free demonstrations and free food.

National Night Out will be celebrated in communities all across the nation on Tuesday. At 1 p.m., Park Place to be closed to traffic, but parking behind Town Hall will be accessible from Elm Street. At 4 p.m., the bottom of Elm Street will be closed to traffic.

Here is a summary of the scheduled activities:

• 5 to 8 p.m. - Music by local Band 95 South, booths open, free hot dogs, chips and drinks provided by Target and ice cream provided by Nana's Ice Cream.

• 5:30 p.m. - Good News Club at Bev's Corner for ages 5  through 12.

• 6 p.m. - Welcome speeches from RCA President Jim Sendrak and Deputy Mayor, Brian Motola. Introduction of guests - Miss Greater Rockville Katlyn Lewicke, the National Anthem by Kaitlyn Bogue, Miss Tolland County, a Moment of Silence for Aurora, CO, victims.

6:30 p.m. - Rev. Ray Dupere of the Union Congregational Church will rappel down church bell tower.

7:30 p.m. - Silent Auction prizes to be awarded.

Other featured activities include:

• Free face painting with Jenna Rodriguez.

• A free bounce house and games for kids with the Girl Scouts.

• ID cards to be issued for kids by New York Life Insurance.

• YMCA children's crafts and activities.

• Information on the new “Neighborhood Advocate Program” for the Rockville area.

Vernon Patch will be hosting a booth at the event.

The rain date is Aug. 8.
