May 29, 2011: Talcottville Memorial Day Ceremonies

The Talcottville Memorial Day Parade might be short in length, but the route has a long line of history.

The Talcottville Memorial Day commemorative ceremonies are scheduled for today in a section of town rich in history and loaded with historical markers.

Here are five facts related to the parade:

1. Step-off for the parade is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the Talcottville Congregational Church, 10 Elm Hill Road.

2. Organizers call it the "shortest parade in the world,'' because it goes to Mt. Hope Cemetery, a short jaunt down Main Street.

3. The Civil War monument, erected in the cemetery in 1869, is touted as the second-oldest in the nation. A ceremony will take place nearby when the parade arrives there.

4. All veterans are invited to attend and march the parade - in uniform.

5. A short worship service is scheduled for the church after the return march.
