Letter: An Update from the Mayor

His latest letter to the people.

To the Editor:

Spring is finally here and it’s time for an update of all the great things happening in Vernon.

Did you know that Vernon Ranks 73rd in the country as one of the Safest Towns/Cities with a population over 25,000? We are working hard to keep our streets safe and our education system improving. We are constantly looking for ways to improve.

Recently, the Town Council passed a motion to bring the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities program with PROACT to Vernon. This program is a prescription option for those without insurance and is helpful to those with insurance as well. If you are in the “donut hole” it will help you hold your costs down. Look for the flyers and cards in the mail. Everyone can join, no fees to the citizens and no costs to the town. This program is for everyone and best of all there are no income requirements.

Our Economic Development Commission and Economic development coordinator are working diligently to improve our tax base. The sale of Amerbelle, the grants for the Roosevelt, Hockanum and Talcottville mills, coupled with existing business expansions like Olender’s and Cumberland Farms, show that Vernon is thriving and getting stronger all the time.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the VNA on its 100th Year Anniversary. This organization has been providing services and resources to our most frail citizens for many years and we are fortunate to have them within our borders.

On behalf of all our citizens I would like to thank the Department of Public Works and the Parks and Recreation Department for their hard work keeping our streets open and safe during our winter season. These employees work long, tiring hours to keep our streets free of hazards during major winter storms. A hearty thank you to them on a Job Well Done!

Finally, as you all know we are in the thick of the budget process. We are hoping that you will participate and voice your opinions about the budget that will go to automatic referendum on May 7, 2013 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Center 375 - 375 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon. The economy is still struggling as are our citizens. It is important that every voice is heard during this process. Please feel free to call my office with any questions you might have regarding the budget or any other matter of interest to you.

George F. Apel
Mayor
Town of Vernon
