July 20, 2011: National Lolipop Day

How did Dum Dums get their name?

1. With Sunny Skies and temperatures in the upper 80s, it will be sweet for National Lolipop Day, especially considering Thursday and Fridau willbe in the upper 90s.

2. Dum-Dum Pops were originated by Akron Candy Co., Bellevue, Ohio, in 1924. I.C. Bahr, the early sales manager of the company, named the ball-shaped candy on a stick and figured dum-dum was a word any child could say.

3. According to the National Confectioners Association Web site today is National Lollipop Day. Honey on a stick is said to have been around since cavemen roamed the earth, so if you consider that a “lollipop,” that may be your closest answer as to who invented it, because no one really knows. However, it is generally believed that George Smith, the owner of a small, American candy store, first called the sweet a “lollipop” in the early 1900s, which he named after his favorite race horse, Lolly Pop.
