July 12, 2011: Safety Town is in Session

The week-long class for those entering kindergarten teaches a variety of safety topics.

The town's Safety Town program kicked off this week at Lake Street School.

Safety Town is a one-week class in which pre-kindergarten children receive safety instruction in preparation for elementary school. Morning and afternoon sessions are scheduled.

The program is sponsored by the Vernon Junior Women's Club and the Vernon Police Department.

Here are five things Safety Town teaches youngsters:

1. Awareness of strangers.

2. The dangers of poisons and medicines.

3. Bicycle and traffic safety.

4. Bus safety.

5. Fire safety.
