HVCC Chief: Saturday's Letter Carrier Food Drive A Vital One

On Saturday, the National Association of Letter Carriers is conducting its annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive - an event that directly benefits the Hockanum Valley Community Council's food pantry.

On Wednesday, HVCC Executive Director David Engelson said this weekend is a vital time because there is still a shortage.

The pantry distributes about 4,000 food items each month, Engelson said.

Residents are asked to leave sturdy bags containing non-perishable foods at the mailboxes Saturday morning. Food will be picked up by the letter carriers and donated to HVCC.

Engelson said summer snack items are in particular demand - like pre-packaged crackers and cheese.
