Food Drive Nets More Than 38,000 Items

The drive was at both local Stop & Shops.

The "Emergency of Hunger" food drive involving pubic service professionals and Rotary Clubs from five towns proceeded more than 38,000 items donated to local food banks. 

According to organizers, a total of 38,309 food items were collected in Vernon, Enfield, South Windsor, Windsor and Manchester. 

Check, gift card and cash donations totaled $24,143, organizers said. 

Donated turkeys totaled 596, organizers said. 

The five-year total for the program stands at 147,000 food items, $96,186 in donations and 4,710 turkeys, organizers said. 

Locally, the Hockanum Valley Community Council benefits from the drive.
