Memorial Day Ceremony Takes Place at Burpee Grave Site

It was an early start to Memorial Day.

Memorial Day observances began on Thursday, when the 14th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers Co. G and the local Sons of Union Veterans combined forces to decorate the Civil War graves in Grove Hill Cemetery in Rockville and conduct a service at the grave of Col. Thomas Francis Burpee.

The regiment was involved in 34 major battles and skirmishes and there is a display noting it on a wall at the New England Cvil War Museum at the Vernon Town Hall.

The battles include Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, The Wilderness, Spottsylvania and Cold Harbor.
