2. The event is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. The Rockville Community Alliance, the Vernon Police Department, the Vernon Parks & Recreation Department and the Vernon Community Network are co-hosting National Night Out as a show of community togetherness.

3.  This year in downtown Rockville, the event will feature free food, free live music and entertainment, free bounce houses for the young people and many area groups giving out free information and other give-aways.

4. Music will be provided by the DeChamplain Brothers from 5 to 6 p.m., Tru 2 Life from 6 to 6:30 p.m., and ETX from 7 to 8 p.m.

5. There will be a silent auction of gift baskets and gift certificates donated by the organizations who are sponsoring booths. More than 50 organizations have signed up, including Patch.

Here is Mayor Jason McCoy's statement on the event:

"Known as America’s night out against crime, National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention event that is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. This is the 28th Annual National Night Out and it is celebrated by thousands of communities in the United States, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.

“This event is great for the community – it affords residents the opportunity to get involved and learn more about what crime and drug prevention awareness programs are available. I encourage all members of the community to join-in on the fun, as we send a strong message to criminals that our neighborhood is strong and does not welcome crime.”
