April 5, 2011: Remembering Gene Pitney

Town lost "The Rockville Rocket" five years go today.


1. Five years ago today, the town lost Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Famer Gene Pitney. The "Rockville Rocket'' is considered Vernon's native son and gained notoriety for songs like, ''The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance'' and ''Town Without Pity." He died on April 5, 2006 while on tour in the United Kingdom. To honor him, the commemorative display at Town Hall is being rearranged.

2. Vernon - and Rockville - lost a real fixture on March 29 when died at the age of 92. For 30 years, Doris volunteered at the gift shop at Rockville General Hospital and was there right up to the week she died. She will be remembered at an 11 a.m.  service at Grove Hill Cemetery on Friday.

3. Theis scheduled to meet tonight at 7 at Town Hall for its regular meeting and on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Town Hall for budget deliberations.

4. The council will not meet in two weeks in observance of Passover.
